How to Train Your Dragon 2

2014 Movie · PG · ["Fantasy", "Action", "Adventure", "Animation", "Family"]

Threshold Analysis

A visually stunning sequel centering on family identity, sacrificial love, and courageous leadership. Stoick's death is the film's heaviest moment. Movieguide calls it 'fun, relatively clean, and inspiring.' The worldview is largely positive, emphasizing responsibility, reconciliation, and laying down one's life for others.

Concerns

  • Stoick's death by friendly fire is sudden and emotionally heavy for young viewers
  • Extended battle violence involving large-scale dragon warfare
  • Norse polytheistic setting includes passing 'gods' references
  • Hiccup initially resists adult responsibility — though he ultimately embraces it

Positives

  • Sacrificial love modeled powerfully — a father dies protecting his son
  • Strong theme: embrace your calling and lead with integrity
  • Family reconciliation is central — mother reunited with family
  • Courage, loyalty, and selflessness consistently rewarded

Content Flags

Languagemild

A small number of mild exclamations (e.g. 'Oh gods') reflecting Norse setting. No profanity. Plugged In notes language concerns are minimal.

Violencemoderate

Extended dragon battle sequences including one significant scene where Stoick is killed by a mind-controlled Toothless — emotionally intense and potentially distressing for young children.

Positive Valuesyes

Plugged In and Movieguide both credit strong themes of family, sacrifice, leadership, and courage. Father-son relationship is central and deeply positive.

Discussion Guide

  1. Stoick gives his life protecting Hiccup. How does that reflect what Jesus said in John 15:13 about laying down your life for those you love?
  2. Hiccup doesn't want the responsibility of being chief. Have you ever avoided something God or your parents were calling you to do? What happened?
  3. Hiccup's mom had been away for years but was welcomed back. What does that reunion teach us about forgiveness and restoring broken relationships?
